Yesterday NPR Boise stated that the EPA had determined that a dozen or so reservoirs in Southern Idaho have mercury in them. "More later" said the announcer. Then nothing for the rest of the day and nothing to day ! I have searched all the CEEI s web sites for mercury ( www.apsrs.org) the 1996 survey and the 1998 survey and the only thing was "pathogens" but no mercury. ! So i am going to ask for those files and find out if the EPA has them! I have the file # numbers.
This follows the Silver Creek story that a big rainbow had 60 times the amount of mercury that he should. and since mercury is cumulative, when and where in the devil did all this mercury come from. Four weeks ago the ICL told President of the Boise State on an NPR radio program "New Horizons" that the source reading were 1000 units over background. That every fish should be dead etc etc" . This squares with several other reservoirs That were mentioned in the last few days,and that 26 Nevada gold mines had processed gold ore for 20 years in to idaho ! There are some other things. but you get the picture ! We will have to see what the EPA says this next Monday when they get open.The tonnage was huge. ( equivalwnt to 120 coal fired pwer plants !' ( CEEI HAS ASKED THE UNEP United Nations Environmental Programme to survey all UN Countries for their "drought status." and to ptovide a CGCSAS system for them. Answers are coming slowly.
Drought status is determined by local opinion about past rainfall and moisture available ( Ground water) planting experience, and present out look about snow pack, weather forecasts, market conditions. Usually county commissioners, consult with, Govt agencies, Weather Bureau, Forest Service. USGS, BLM and Dept of Agricullture,( state and federal inputs).Farm bureaus, etc.
The GCGSAS demonstration with an permafrost archive file and how easy it is for a student to search of the files and group them the run a key word search against at new cgcsas file. They can handle about 30,000 line items at once ! Write a paper and then post the paper (with teachers permission on the CEEI eco-pedia on any climate or enviro subject with an abstract or a summary ! The system is set up for 6th graders, high school, college, Post grads and experts level.
Even parents can use it. You can navigate through and into the climate and planet inter-net.
i figure that we have 40,000,000" hard core researchers" out there ! How they participate is to simply e-mail a copy of the enviro-climate paper tp CEEI's eco-pedia.org ( another CEEI archive web site). exclusive for student assessment papers about local, state, and national issues as well.
All this is set up to challenge 6th graders on up to take charge of their interests, and get the experience they need to do a good job, and get on with their lives no matter what they decide they want to do. ! So CEEI is now going to Africa because the Kenyans get it. So do the people of Tanzania, and 5 other countries that CEEI has business with !
